HICKENLOOPER RESPONDS TO GROUP'S CONCERNS: Mayoral
candidate John Hickenlooper on Monday responded to
concerns raised by the Colorado Campaign for Middle
East Peace, whose members say he slandered them.
Hickenlooper's statement came shortly after CCMEP
members held a news conference demanding an
explanation for comments the candidate allegedly made
linking CCMEP to the terrorist group Hamas.
"Let me state that I have never issued public
statements linking CCMEP to Hamas," Hickenlooper said
in the statement. "Nor has there ever been anything on
my website linking CCMEP to Hamas."
At most, Hickenlooper spokeswoman Lindy Lent said, the
candidate may have repeated a rumor he had heard
linking the two groups to one individual.
The trouble began, Lent said, when a third party whom
she would not identify started spreading rumors about
CCMEP. The rumors, she said, were an attempt to
discredit Hickenlooper, who sat on the board of the
Chinook Fund, which once gave CCMEP a $3,000 grant.
